If you’re still here you must think it was a termite and not an ant. If you see a single termite swarmer, don’t panic yet, as the situation may be too early to treat or maybe it was swarming by from another building. So, let’s look at the signs of both drywood termite and subterranean termite infestation and damage.

Both drywoods and subterranean termites will have the following signs:

  • Swarmers
  • Frass (round wooden pellets)
  • Piles of wings
  • Kick out holes

Now if you’re looking for drywood termites you must check the attic, and if you see the above in there you just may need a termite treatment. Drywood termites’ wings are iridescent, so if you have a bright white light and shine it over the wings, they’ll reflect a blue-purple color. Subterranean termites’ wings are not iridescent. Other signs of drywood termites include veneer cracks and maze-like tunnels in the walls or furniture.

Subterranean termites live in the soil and require moisture, so sometimes damage can appear as water damage. Even though they live in the soil they will create mud tunnels so the can access the homes foundation. Other signs of damage would include buckling wood, swollen floors and ceilings, and visible mazes within walls and furniture.

Overall, it is always best to get a professional opinion, and Palm Coast Pest Control will be there for you!
