COCKROACH PREVENTION

No one likes pesky cockroaches, especially inside your home! The most common of cockroaches, being the palmetto bug, lives in or around the base of the palm trees. When rain comes you may notice more activity, as they’re getting flushed out of their homes. If you happen to be redoing your yard or putting in new mulch, you may notice more activity as well. Cockroaches live outside but will venture inside if they have access, and or there are attractors for them in the home.

Food, water and shelter are the big targets for cockroaches. Starting with food, you want to eliminate all access to it. Make sure food is stored in air tight containers, and to clean up all crumbs and residue left behind. When it comes to water you want to remove all standing water. Ever notice bugs attraction to the kitchen and bathroom? They love moisture. Check your pipes and repair leaks. Caulk any gaps around the sink or tub. Remove all the moisture you can. Lastly, there is shelter.  Cockroaches can squeeze through the tiniest of cracks and crevices, so you want to caulk any entry points you may see. Put weather stripping on all entry ways, including windows and doors. Also, if you’re having lots of clutter, they can easily hide in it. Remove all clutter that you’re capable of to remove hiding spots.

Cockroaches use pheromones to communicate. Wood, cardboard and paper surfaces are their preferred areas because they’re better at soaking in those scents. Cockroaches are year-round pests and they aren’t very picky. Cleanliness is the best way to prevent cockroaches.

You want to deny them access to food, water and shelter as they’re the main factors that attract them. Cockroaches feed at night, so if you see them during the day you know you have an issue on your hands. Not all cockroaches can be treated the same way as some are harder to get rid of then others.
