No one likes weeds or fungus in their yard. Most the time the amount of watering is the culprit. Let’s take a look at some things you can do to help prevent your lawn from getting overrun, and to help keep your lawn looking beautiful.
Fungus:
- Avoid overwatering.
- Remove and carefully dispose of dead or diseased leaves and flowers.
- Landscapers should make sure to clean their blades between properties to avoid spreading.
- Water your lawn in the morning.
Weeds:
- Avoid overwatering.
- Pull weeds out by the roots.
- Cover bare areas with mulch or living ground cover.
- Raise the blades on your mower. Mow your grass to 2 inches, no shorter.
- Mow weekly.
- Give herbicides enough time to work.
Visually, shorter grass may seem like an appealing option. But too short of a lawn, one that exposes the stems of grass blades, translates into a stressed lawn with minimal energy reserves to ward of disease and weeds.
Along with over watering, you can over fertilize too. Water and fertilizer are important for a healthy lawn, but you must have the right balance to keep your lawn looking lush and green.
As mentioned earlier, overwatering is the biggest culprit. It can cause mold, mildew, yard fungus and weeds to form. Once the grass is established, water deeply but less frequently. Your grass only needs about an inch of water per week. Water early in the day so grass will dry in the sun; wet grass is more susceptible to get taken over by fungus and weeds. If there are shaded areas that get less sunlight, water them less to avoid a flooded lawn.
