Its rainy season and along with rainy season come’s more pests. A pest you will notice a lot more, but shouldn’t be concerned about are millipedes. Millipedes live in the soil, but the rain washes them out. Most will find them around the perimeter of the home and coming through entrance ways. No need to worry as they will dry out and die not long after leaving the soil.
Millipedes dwell in damp areas outdoors, but can migrate inside if their habitat becomes too hot and dry. They will normally gather on porches and patios, as well as climb the foundation of the home and often find entry ways. To prevent this from happening you could seal around doors, windows, cracks, gaps and crevices, plus reducing moist places that promote millipede survival.
Millipedes are common garden scavengers that feed on and decompose organic matter making them very beneficial to the environment. You can find them in flowerbeds, gardens, mulch, sheds and crawl spaces. They do not bite or sting nor do any damage to food, structures or furniture. However, some species execute a defensive fluid that irritates the skin of people who come in contact with them.
They can become a major nuisance because they move in such large numbers. They also are most active at night, so when someone finds them during the day you may seem surprised how they got there. Overall, with the current weather these pests are going to be a much more reoccurring bug to see because of the rain. No reason to be alarmed though because they wont live long after leaving their natural habitat in the soil.
