KEEP SPIDERS AT BAY

Did you know there are more phobias about spiders than any other pests? Spiders are more of a nuisance pest as they can be quite beneficial around your home. Spiders like to eat other insects that come around the area. Though not every spider is beneficial, as there are some spiders that are very dangerous. The black widow and brown recluse spiders bite and venom can put you in the hospital. Though deaths from spiders are only 6 per decade in the United States. You’re more likely never going to run into a brown recluse spider as they like to stay in more secluded areas like barns.

There is no perfect spider control as spiders are very dirty creatures, and don’t regularly clean themselves to take in the poison. Chemicals aren’t very effective against spiders nor do they really pick them up, so just spraying is not a great defense. You can lay glue traps, spray pesticides in cracks and crevices, contact kill and or eliminate their food sources. With spiders having long legs their bellies are well off the ground. Residue will only touch their feet. Spiders don’t have a circulatory system that carries insecticide from their feet to their organs like other pests. You have to make contact through direct sprays or hit them with your weapon of choice.

Spiders are arachnids not insects, so they don’t regularly clean themselves like other insects. They spend most their time in webs (non-treated surfaces), so you must make sure to knock down the webbing. If you use a pesticide in a crack that the spider comes in and out of there is more chance, they will rub against the pesticide. Reducing their food supply and killing other insects will kelp keep them at bay.

Most spiders hang out around light sources, as flying insects are attracted to light. Running spiders like brown recluse and wolf spiders won’t be in a web. Glue and sticky traps can capture other pests and you can find spiders will go after the prey stuck on there. The most effective places to place traps would be in dark, quiet areas. You want to place them in common spider travel areas like in a closet, between a bed and a wall or by any piece of furniture. Glue traps can point you in the direction of the source of the infestation. If that direction shows you any opening consider caulking those cracks, get weather stripping, etc.

Spiders are antisocial creatures, so you won’t usually find them with other spiders or in a busy area. Since they operate on their own and don’t share food, just whack them if you see them. With our regular pest control and perimeter services, we knock down any and all cob webs around the home. Using a professional pest control service will help maintain a spider and pest free environment.
